Animal Alert

This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.

When returning to a flood affected home, you could discover unexpected company. Animals seeking shelter from the flood waters could have found your home, garage or other buildings very inviting. Carefully inspect your home and property before moving back in. Snakes, some poisonous, could have taken up residence. And beware of wild animals like raccoons and skunks. Rabies is the concern here. Also avoid dogs and cats you're not familiar with. And, mosquitoes, flies and other insects that breed in areas of debris and stagnant water can carry disease. So repair damaged screens, wear insect repellent when outdoors and cover up as much as possible, especially when outside at night.

This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
