This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.
If your children have been through the recent flood, they may experience sleep disruption, nightmares, and difficulty separating from you and other relatives. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry says kids can also be grouchy and may fear another flood. These are common responses to a disaster. To help put your children at ease, spend extra time with them in play or at bedtime. Also try to get them back into the routine of daily life as quickly as possible. But the most important thing that you can do is to reassure your children that you are there for them. You can call the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for more information at 1-800-333-7636.
This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
