Chemical Clean-up

This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.

Agricultural chemicals on the farm require special handling in the wake of a flood. You should treat items ranging from fertilizers to fuels and other flammable materials as hazardous waste. You will have to dispose of any containers that are rusted. Or you may transfer the substances to other containers that are clearly marked. You will also have to properly dispose of any bags that have become wet. And for that you'll have to go through the proper solid-waste or regulatory agency within your area. For proper disposal advice, call your landfill operator, state department of health or the department of food and agriculture at 916-654-0462.

This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
