Gearing Up to Drive

This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.

Storms create driving hazards, but you can reduce the risks if you're prepared. Have a mechanic check your car carefully. All systems should be in good working order. Make sure your tires have enough tread--you'll need a good grip on the road. Keep a scraper handy to remove ice and snow buildup on windows. And keep your gas tank full. Listen to the radio or call your highway patrol for updated road conditions. Travel during daylight hours. And just in case, wear the right clothes. Layers of loose clothing can help you stay warm. Carry food and water, and keep a kit in your car with blankets, flashlights, and tire chains.

This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
