This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.
What's the best defense against flood and storm damage? It's so-called "mitigation" - ongoing efforts to reduce or eliminate the risk of damage and injury. Mitigation includes everything from wise land use and safe home construction to disaster plans. There are lots of simple things you can do: Buy flood insurance. Plan and practice evacuation routes and locate shelters. Keep emergency supplies on hand, including a first-aid kit, flashlights, a battery-operated radio and extra batteries. Don't forget emergency food and water. During a flood warning or watch, listen for the latest information, and if you're told to evacuate, do it as quickly as possible.
This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
