Landslide Safety - 1

This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.

If you live in the foothills or the mountains, you may think you're above the reach of flood waters. But after heavy rain, stay alert for another danger: landslides or mudslides. Watch for these landslide warning signs: doors or windows that suddenly stick or jam, or new cracks in plaster or tile. Outside your house, look for stairs that pull away from the building, or cracks in your driveway that get wider. Often you can hear a landslide coming--the rumble gets louder as the slide approaches. If you're inside, STAY INSIDE, and get under some heavy furniture, like a desk. If you're outside, get out of its path, run for high ground, and if possible put a building or a group of trees between you and the slide.

This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
