Disaster Preparedness for People with Disabilities

This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.

If you have a disability, being prepared for a disaster may take some extra planning. Your emergency supplies should include a list of important medical information: write down the medications you take, the names of your doctors, and any special equipment you use. If you have a speech or hearing disability, have writing pads and pencils handy to communicate with others. Remind friends that you may not be able to hear warnings. Ask them to keep you informed. No matter what your disability, have a plan to get out of your home, if evacuation become necessary. Find someone who can help, especially if you use a wheelchair, and make sure your helper knows how it operates, so you can make a smooth getaway.

This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
