Family Disaster Kit

This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.

Floods and storms can knock out power to your house. And there's no guarantee that help will come immediately. Prepare a special emergency kit, to help your family cope. You'll need water, food, and emergency supplies. Store water in sturdy plastic containers. One gallon of water per person per day is a good guide. Choose foods that are non-perishable and don't need cooking, like peanut butter, canned fruit, and granola bars. Don't forget formula and diapers for your baby. And have a change of clothes and shoes handy for each family member. Your kit should include a battery-operated radio, a flashlight, and a non-electric can opener. Finally, make sure your first-aid kit is well stocked.

This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
