This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.
If the storms brought by El Nino have taken a toll on your home, you may be in the market for a contractor to make some repairs. Unfortunately, disasters sometimes bring out home-repair rip-off artists. So shop carefully for a contractor. Ask your friends, relatives, or neighbors for recommendations--and check with your insurance agent or claims adjuster. Make sure the contractor is licensed and insured. Call the state contractors licensing board at 1-800-321-2752. Then make sure you understand all the charges, estimates, and terms of the contract. And never pay for the whole job up front or with cash.
This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
