Landslide Safety - 2

This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.

Heavy rains soaking into a steep slope is a recipe for mudslides. If your house is on a hillside, plan ahead, to keep your family safe. Plant ground cover on sloping areas, to hold soil in place. Dig channels or build walls to deflect mud and tumbling rocks. But make sure you don't send flows to your neighbor's property. If a mudslide threatens, you may need to leave quickly . . . so consult a map now, and plan at least two evacuation routes. And set a place to meet if separated. Also choose an out-of-state friend or relative who can relay messages in an emergency. Often if local phone lines are jammed after a disaster, you can still dial long-distance.

This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
