Before the Winter Storm

This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.

Be prepared before a winter storm hits! Have a shovel or snow-blower on hand. Stock up on rock salt and kitty litter to melt ice and provide traction to prevent nasty spills. Prepare your home. Insulate your walls and attic, weather-strip your doors and windows, install storm windows, and wrap your pipes with insulation. Have emergency heating supplies on hand--firewood, a well-vented stove, or an approved space heater. Check the smoke detectors in your home, and if you use a kerosene heater, follow the instructions carefully. And don't forget the normal disaster supplies--flashlights, food, bottled water, a first-aid kit, and a portable radio.

This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
