This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.
Long before rivers and streams threaten to overflow, prepare yourself for a flood. Store supplies you might need in your car, your home, your workplace. Start with food, a manual can opener, and water--three gallons per person. Add a first aid kit, a portable radio, flashlights, and some ready cash, in case the ATM machines go down. Keep your car fueled--filling stations can't operate when the power goes out. Keep sandbags and other emergency materials handy. Put important documents and valuables in your safe-deposit box. And check your homeowner's or renter's insurance policy. If you have no flood insurance, buy a policy that covers flood damage.
