This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.
As storm-affected households recover, adults must look out for the children. Begin with a safety survey to spot sharp objects, weapons, household chemicals, or medicines within reach. To protect your children against disease, make sure their immunizations are up to date. It's a good idea to check baby books or inoculation records, or check with your doctor, so you won't have additional hazards from preventable childhood diseases. Respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses that lead to coughs, diarrhea and vomiting are most common after floods. To guard against them, make sure food is safe and that your children's hands are clean before they put any food in their mouths.
This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
