This is an Environminute Disaster Advisory from the National Safety Council and the Governors Office of Emergency Services.
Exposure to hazardous chemicals is one danger you've got to be aware of in a flood-affected area. Thoughts of toxic contamination may bring industrial sites to mind. But, under your own roof, household chemical waste is just as likely to be a problem. As you begin the cleanup, consider what you're dealing with. Fertilizers and insecticides in bags, boxes and cans; paints and solvents can all pose toxic risks. Wear suitable gloves, boots and other protective clothing. Before you reclaim your house and basement, do a quick mental inventory of the hazardous materials you have and where you think they are. Then, bag all damaged containers or rusted cans for proper disposal.
This Environminute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation.
