Andrews:
I'm Richard Andrews, director of the Governor's Office
of Emergency Services. This is an EnvironMinute Disaster Advisory
from our agency and the National Safety Council. :10
Announcer:
Smokey Bear is a campfire expert . . . you can trust
his advice. To build a campfire right, Smokey says, "Follow these
steps." First, dig a small pit, away from overhanging branches.
Circle the pit with rocks. Now, create a buffer zone by clearing an
area five feet wide, around the pit--down to the soil. Stack extra
wood upwind, away from the flames, and always keep a bucket of water
and a shovel handy. After you light the fire, do not throw away the
match until it's cold! And never leave a fire unattended, even for an
instant. Dry brush burns fast and hot, and just one smoldering ember
or floating spark can ignite a raging wildfire. :34
