Andrews:
I'm Richard Andrews, director of the Governor's Office
of Emergency Services. This is an EnvironMinute Disaster Advisory
from our agency and the National Safety Council. :10
Announcer:
The best way to stop the relentless advance of a raging
fire is with plenty of open space. That's why it's important to clear
away brush and vegetation around your home. The amount of open space
you need depends on where you live. If you live on a steep slope or
hillside, you'll need to take extra precautions. Remember, if you
live in a canyon, heat and combustion are funneled uphill. The slope
preheats before the fire arrives. So trees and grass almost explode
when touched by flames. The steeper the hill, the faster the fire ... and the more space you'll need to protect your home. To learn more,
contact your local fire department. :34
