Fire Spread and Roofs

(THEME :02 AND UNDER)

Andrews:
I'm Richard Andrews, Director of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services. This is an EnvironMinute Disaster Advisory from our agency and the National Safety Council. :10

Announcer:
The roof of your home is extremely vulnerable during a wildfire. A roof made of certain materials can act like a stepping-stone for flames to cross the landscape. Wooden shake and shingle roofs are the most dangerous. In fact, they're the number-one cause of structure losses and can actually feed the flames of an advancing fire. When wooden shingles ignite, they can be torn away by the wind and carried great distances, spreading fire to other places. So make sure your roof is made of noncombustible materials. Asphalt, tile, and slate are some roofing materials that can help your home survive a fire. :34

Announcer:
This EnvironMinute Disaster Advisory was brought to you by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation. :05
