State Certified Defensive Driving Programs

The following is a listing of State Certified Programs that the National Safety Council administers through its Data Management Center. New York Point & Insurance Reduction Program

New York motorists who complete the Defensive Driving Course 8/6 program in New York through a Department of Motor Vehicles approved training center:

  • May receive a reduction of up to four points on their driver record (course may be taken once every 18 months for point reduction).
  • Will receive a minimum of 10% reduction in the base rate of the auto liability and collision insurance premiums each year for three years, providing the motorist who completes the course is the principal operator of the vehicle.

Connecticut Driver Retraining Program

Connecticut motorists will be required to attend an Operator Retraining Program if they are: 16-17 years of age who have received their first conviction, 18-24 years of age who have received their second conviction, or 25 years of age or older who have received their third conviction within a three-year period. Motorists are notified by the Department of Motor Vehicles and are given 60 days to complete the program. Subsequent violations require a subsequent completion of the program. The Defensive Driving Course four-hour CT version is an approved Operator Retraining Program and will meet this requirement.

Florida Driver Improvement Programs

Florida motorists may elect to take the Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course to avoid points from a moving violation being added to their driving record. Individuals may take the BDI course once every twelve months, up to a maximum of five times in a lifetime. Motorists may also be required to attend a BDI course due to a court order, to fulfill a Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC) requirement, or to be eligible for an insurance discount. The National Safety Council's DDC-4 is approved to fulfill the requirements of the BDI program.

National Safety Council is also an approved provider for the Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) course. This program is twelve hours in duration and is used for those drivers who attend by order of the court, or pursuant to specific sections of the law including point suspensions and habitual traffic offenders. The National Safety Council's Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving-12 hour version is the approved curriculum.

Florida motorists are required to complete a Traffic Law & Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course before an initial Florida drivers license may be issued by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The course is required to be conducted in a minimum of four (4) hours. National Safety Council's DDC-FIRST curriculum is approved to meet this program.

Illinois Probationary License Program

Illinois motorists are eligible to receive a Probationary License if they have been suspended for 60 to 90 days for three moving violations in a 12-month period and have been notified of eligibility by the Secretary of State's Office. Completion of the eight-hour Defensive Driving Course - Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving is mandatory to receive the Probationary License.

Illinois Remedial Education Course

Illinois motorists under the age of 20 are required to complete a Driver Remedial Education Course if their driving privileges have been suspended for a minimum of 30 days for two moving violations in a 24-month period or are convicted under the zero tolerance laws under the Graduated Licensing Program. Motorists who complete the Alive at 25 program and fulfill the other requirements of their suspension are eligible to have their license reinstated.

Indiana Driver Safety Program

The following courses are approved to meet the requirements of the Indiana Driver Safety Program:

  • Defensive Driving Course-4
  • Defensive Driving Course-8/6
  • Defensive Driving Course - Professional Truck Driving

Motorists who have been convicted of at least two traffic violations within a 12-month period are required to attend a Driver Safety Program. Upon completion of the program, the motorist receives a four-point credit on their driving record. This credit is effective for a 3-year period.

Indiana motorists may also take the course to receive a four-point credit on their record even if they do not have a violation. Classes are available statewide. Massachusetts Driver Retraining Program

Motorists who have received notification from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles that their driving privileges are or will be suspended due to accumulated surgchargeable events must complete the eight-hour Defensive Driving Course - Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving program to avoid the suspension or to have their license reinstated. Motorists may also be required to attend due to other circumstances.

Texas Driving Safety Program

Texas motorists who complete the Defensive Driving Course 8/6 program in Texas through a Texas Education Agency approved training center:

  • May receive a ticket dismissal, if approved by the traffic court and
  • May receive a reduction in auto insurance premiums, if approved by the motorist's insurance company.
