Itasca, IL - The National Safety Council is troubled by new estimates from the Governors Highway Safety Association signaling that 2018 saw the largest number of pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. since 1990. People rarely are more vulnerable than when they are negotiating traffic, crossing busy streets or walking at night. Add in driver and pedestrian distraction, as well as impairment, and the results can be deadly.
With the annual number of motor vehicle deaths staying stubbornly flat, more attention must be paid to the unprotected individuals who share our roads with countless multi-ton vehicles. And, better data collection is needed to understand all the various reasons these fatalities are occurring.
Everyone deserves to travel safely, and this reported spike in pedestrian deaths illustrates that we all must do more to keep each other safe when traveling from Point A to Point B.
With a century-long legacy, the National Safety Council is a global center for safety expertise. Let's work together to align resources. We look forward to learning about ways we can join efforts to expand safety everywhere!
